About Alton Water Nature Reserve

Alton Water Nature Reserve is situated near the village of Alton in Suffolk, England, encompassing a 400-hectare reservoir and surrounding woodlands, meadows, and wetlands. The reservoir was created in the 1970s to supply water to Ipswich and the surrounding areas and has since become an important habitat for local and migratory wildlife. The reserve supports a wide range of bird species, including wintering wildfowl such as wigeons, pochards, and teal, as well as kingfishers and grey herons throughout the year. Its grasslands and woodlands provide shelter for mammals such as roe deer and foxes, alongside numerous butterflies and dragonflies.

Visitors to Alton Water enjoy a variety of outdoor activities including walking, cycling, birdwatching, and water sports such as sailing, kayaking, and fishing. The site offers several waymarked trails of moderate difficulty that follow the reservoir’s perimeter and wind through the adjoining natural habitats, making it ideal for family outings and wildlife observation. Facilities at the reserve include a visitor center with educational exhibits, picnic areas, and accessible parking. With its relatively flat terrain and well-maintained paths, the reserve is particularly popular among dog walkers and amateur naturalists.

Alton Water’s combination of water-based recreation and wildlife conservation makes it a valued destination in Suffolk. The reserve provides a tranquil escape from urban life and an excellent opportunity to engage with England’s natural environment. Throughout the year, seasonal events and guided walks are arranged by the managing authorities to encourage environmental awareness and offer visitors an in-depth experience of the local ecology.
